Ultimately, the researchers stopped the study early because the drug, terutroban, showed no extra profit.
Previous research in animals has been concluded that the investigational drug as effective as aspirin to prevent clots medicine, and researchers have questioned whether the compound has other positive effects on the human cardiovascular system.
The new study by Dr. Marie-Germaine Bousser and colleagues from Lariboisiere Hospital in Paris compared the drug with aspirin in patients with ischemic type of stroke caused by clogged arteries. Of the more than 19,000 participants, about half terutroban consume, and the rest of aspirin. When traced back 28 months later, subjects who consumed terutroban turned out no better than those taking aspirin.
“In the perspective of the world, aspirin remains the gold standard of antiplatelet drugs for secondary stroke prevention are reviewed in terms of efficacy, tolerance, and cost,” said the researchers who published in the May issue of Lancet ..
“With the conclusion that there was no difference between terutroban and aspirin for prevention of stroke, the aspirin therapy remains widely available and inexpensive throughout the world,” said Dr.. Richard B. Libman Head of the Division of Vascular Neurology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York.
But in his commentary, researchers from the Chang Gung University College of Medicine and the University of California, San Diego says that remains to be studied whether terutroban can help patients who have undergone secondary stroke when aspirin was used.he drug, terutroban, showed no extra profit.
